SUMMARY:Gaelforce Mountain Run
DESCRIPTION:Gaelforce Mountain Run 10 March 2018\nConquer The wilds of Connemara\nRegister Here\nUNIQUE ACCESS TO UNMARKED MOUNTAINS WITH 3 DISTANCES\nSpecial access has been granted to this stunning route by local landowners making it an amazing opportunity for mountain running \n1. 22KM EXPERT MOUNTAIN RUN *UTMB QUALIFYING RACE\n 2. 12KM INTERMEDIATE MOUNTAIN RUN\nChallenging terrain throughout with steep ascents and descents.\nBefore entering please read our Entry Requirements for the 12 & 22km runs.\n3. 12KM INTRODUCTORY MOUNTAIN/TRAIL RUN \nFor those who are new to mountain running and are looking for an introductory event. You will need a reasonable level of fitness. \n\nTHE 22KM EXPERT MOUNTAIN RUN *UTMB Qualifying Race\nBRIEF COURSE DESCRIPTION\nSTAGE 1:\nThe route starts from Killary Adventure Centre and heads across the bog until it joins the Western Way walking trail. This brings you onto a forestry road and on to your first ascent of the route. You will stay close to a marked fence as you ascend.\nSTAGE 2:\nThis first hill is 324 metres and you will keep the fence within 10m of you as you climb up the hill. Once you reach the top there is a slow\, gentle descent along the soft ground at the top. You will continue along to a left turn at the end of the valley – a distance of approximately 2 km from the top of the hill.\nSTAGE 3:\nThe route descends for the first part before climbing from approximately 800 feet up to 1800 feet.  This is a steep climb on grassy hills which can be slippy when wet. Next you will continue along to spot height 556 metres.\nThis section of the run is quite boggy and visibility up here can change quite quickly.  Performing a U turn you will head out along the edge of the valley before going downhill into Leenane.  This is a good descent if you are happy on bog and slippy ground\, if not take your time!\nSTAGE 4:\nReaching the back of Leenane you will come out into a private road and then follow this down to the main road.  You will encounter a dangerous corner so be aware of traffic. This road section will be about 600m and before joining the rough Western Way track. Continue along this until you reach the arrow pointing you up your last hill.\nSTAGE 5:\nThe last hill will be marked again with bamboos holding ribbons which you must stay within 10m of as this is the safest route. You continue to the summit cairn.\nFor your descent is quite tricky underfoot so please be aware of conditions and your skill level in descending.  You are aiming for the Western Way again and the path from earlier returning you to Killary Adventure Centre and the finish line. 22km and 4500ft of ascent done and dusted. \n**Please make sure you are aware of the Mandatory Kit List which is extremely important for all distances of the Mountain Run. \n\nTHE 12KM INTERMEDIATE MOUNTAIN RUN\nBRIEF COURSE DESCRIPTION\nSTAGE 1:\nThe route starts from the back of Killary Adventure Centre and heads across the bog until it joins the Western Way walking trail. This brings you into forestry. You continue along a slightly overgrown road to the bottom of the mountain. Starting up the hill you will follow the fence which is marked with red ribbons.\nSTAGE 2:\nThis first hill is 324m and you will keep the fence within 10m of you. Once you reach the top there is a nice gentle descent across the soft ground at the top.\nYou will continue along to a left turn at the end of valley – approximately 2 km from the top of the hill.\nSTAGE 3:\nThe route descends for the first part before climbing from approximately 800 feet up to 1800 feet.  This is a steep climb on grassy hills which can be slippy when wet. At the end of the climb you will continue to follow fencing out and around the top end of the horseshoe. Be aware that it is quite boggy here in sections but you need to maintain sight of the fence.\nSTAGE 4:\nClimbing to the last spot height at 550 feet\, it is all downhill from there.  The descent is along the fence line and with the 22km race rejoining your route there will be people coming past. Take care on descent as it is grass and bog. You will rejoin the Western Way back to Killary Adventure Centre. \n\nTHE 12KM INTRODUCTORY MOUNTAIN RUN\nBRIEF COURSE DESCRIPTION\nThe course follows the same route as Stage 1 of the 12km Intermediate Mountain Run. \nSTAGE 2:\nThis first hill is 324m and you will keep the fence to your left and within 10m. Once you reach the top there is a nice gentle descent across the soft ground at the top.\nHere is where you leave the other runners behind as you head down hill.  This ground is usually quite soft with slippery conditions underfoot.  As you get closer to the bottom you will start to follow a river.\nYou are now on the homeward stretch having reached the forest road. You continue along to the river crossing\, where depending on the amount of water you might have to use the bridge. Once past here you take a bog road to meet the tarmaced road before running a further 500m on main road to finish in Killary Adventure Centre. \n\nPRICING & INFO\n\n\n\nENTRY IS ONLINE ONLY AND WILL OPEN SOON\n22km Expert & 12km Intermediate Events: €40.00pp (places limited)\n12km Introductory Event: €30.00pp\nAll prices shown exclude €4.50 booking fee \nOn-the-day entry if places available: \n22km Expert & 12km Intermediate Events: €50.00pp\n12km Introductory Event: €40.00pp \nPLEASE NOTE\nOnline registration closes at 15:00 on Friday 3 March 2017\, or when all places sold out.\nYou must be an experienced mountain runner to enter the 22km Expert or 12km Intermediate Events – please read the entry requirements before you decide to enter the Gaelforce Mountain Run.\nYou must be over 18 years of age on the day of the race to enter. \nENTRY FEE INCLUDES\n\nEvent technical T-shirt\nA fully marked route\nFull safety cover\nOne-off access to this stunning route\nUse of electronic timing devises\nPost-event food\n\nPlease note t-shirts are ordered 4 weeks in advance of the race. The combination of varying terrain (cliff path\, beach\, promenade) and the views make this an interesting and memorable run which is what you want for your first time doing this distance in a race.\n4. There is an after-race party (need we say anymore). \nWe are also always here at the end of the phone or email to answer any queries you have or to advise you where we can on your preparations. \nGood luck and we will see you in Bray on Saturday April 1st 2017! \n\n\n\n\n

Your route is entirely on sealed roads and will pass through deep valleys\, alongside still lakes and rugged coastline. Refreshment stops will be provided along the way. \nTHE REASON\nThis is an ideal way to kick-start your cycling for the year or to push you that little bit further. It is also just a wonderful way to spend a moonlit evening in April. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nTHE COURSE\n\n\n\n100KM (102KM) SPORTIF\n 100KM ROUTE PROFILE \nCLIFDEN AND THE SKY ROAD\nThe cycle starts at the Station House Hotel in Clifden. You will then pass through the town and take the famous Sky Road. Continue by road around Little Killary Harbour and then over the hillside into Killary Fjord. Make your way along the old Famine greenway (muddy and uneven underfoot) to the shore below Killary Adventure Centre and the kayak transition area.\nSTAGE 2: KAYAKING ACROSS KILLARY HARBOUR (1KM)\nKayak from the southern shore of Killary Fjord to its northern shore in a two-man sit-on-top with the next competitor to you.\nSTAGE 3: TRAIL AND ROAD RUN (4.0KM)\nDisembarking onto the foothills of Mweelrea\, with tufted long grass and boggy holes underfoot. Next on to  a laneway and eventually a narrow road leading you into the Delphi Valley.\nSTAGE 4: CYCLING (32.0KM)
\nLeaving the Delphi Valley and heading for Drummin\, spectacular hills to climb and extreme care needed on the downhills. Expect severe corners and narrow country roads. On to a gradual climb up to the back of Croagh Patrick and the transition area. The final 2km of this section is on a loose-stoned and rough forestry track. Punctures possible on a road bike so caution advised.\nSTAGE 5: MOUNTAIN RUN/WALK (4.5KM)\nCroagh Patrick (764m). Stay on the path and take care on the top section of this mountain as it has a lot of loose stones. If you do not reach the transition here by 2.00pm\, you will not be allowed to ascend the mountain and you will be short coursed back to Westport.\nKillary Gaelforce would like to acknowledge and thank all of the land owners of the Croagh Patrick mountain for the continued support of Gaelforce West\, without which the event could not happen. Killary Gaelforce would like to share the ethos of care on Croagh Patrick with you our competitors. We ask that all competitors ensure that they ‘Leave No Trace’ on the mountain and that what they bring up with them MUST come down. We also encourage you to read the Mayo Mountain Rescue Safety Guidelines when climbing Croagh Patrick.\nSTAGE 6: CYCLING (11.0KM)\nAlways obey the rules of the road. Sealed road first and then onto a very rough off-road trail section that is 2 km long. Expect to carry road bikes over parts of this section. Coming off this there is a steep downhill section on a narrow road. Please take care on this section and watch out for traffic and fellow competitors.\n**New in 2017 – Continue along the route R335 until you reach the junction with the N59\, turn left and continue to next T-junction turning right into Westport town centre. At the bottom of the hill you will take a sharp left down Church street. Note there are speed ramps on the final decent. You will be asked to slow down and dismount before you proceed won Church Street.\nSTAGE 7: FINAL RUN\nBring your bike on to the green area to final bike drop where you will leave your bike and make the final short run to the finish line in Westport Leisure Park in Westport town centre. \n\n\nDOWNLOAD COURSE MAP \n\n\n\n\n\n\nPRICING & INFO\n\n\n\nENTRY IS ONLINE AND IS NOW OPEN\n€75.00pp    Until 17:00     January 31 2018\n€85.00pp    Until 17:00     June 15 2018\n€95.00pp    Until online entry closes & on the day.\nAll prices shown exclude €4.50 booking fee\nExtras: Bike transfer to Delphi: €15.00 per bike \nPLEASE NOTE\nOnline entry closes at 12:00 (midday) Thursday June 21 2018.\nYou must be over 18 years of age on the day of the race to enter. \nRETURN CUSTOMERS & GROUP DISCOUNT:\nEmail us at info@gaelforceevents.com for details. \nENTRY FEE INCLUDES\n\nBus transfer from Westport to start line.\nRace clothing (previous years has been a fleece or Core Stretch jumper)\nRace medal upon completion\nUse of kayaks\, paddles and buoyancy aids\nUse of electronic timing devices\nPost-event food from John West!\n\n\n\nIMPORTANT TIMES & LOCATIONS\nREGISTRATION:\n(Friday June 22 2018)\nKillary Adventure Centre 10:00 – 12:00\nWestport Leisure Park 15:00 – 22:00\nFor more information see our Race FAQs \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFIRST TIMER\n\n\n\nIS IT POSSIBLE OR DO I NEED TO BE AN ATHLETE?\nThe reality is you need to be fit. There is no point thinking you can cover 67km of countryside under your own power if you do not prepare. However you do not need to be a finely-tuned athlete\, you need to be somewhere in between. Gaelforce West is challenging yes\, but possible. Here is some advice on times involved and what you need to prepare for as a first timer:\nTIMING\nThe winners do the entire race in around 3.5 hours. The average time for contestants is approximtely 6.5 hours. You should be able to finish the race in less than 8 hours. If you take any longer\, you will miss the cut-off time for Croagh Patrick (14:00)\, missing the last section of the race.\nTHE FIRST RUN – 12KM \nYou must remember that this is an adventure race\, so expect mud and lots of it. The mud tends to slow the pace down in comparison to other surfaces. If you are planning to walk instead of run you should be able to walk 12km at a continuous fast pace and complete it in under 2hrs.\nTHE DREADED KILLARY KAYAK\nThis is a misplaced dread. The boats we use are called sit-on-top kayaks. Instead of sitting in to a boat you sit on top making them incredibly safe. They are also very easy to paddle even if this is your first time. They are two-man boats so there will be another competitor with you.\nBACK ON DRY(ISH) LAND\nFollowed by a 2 km run through boggy ground and then a final 1.5km on a narrow road. You should be able to do this section in 40 mins.\nTHE FIRST CYCLE – 32.5KM\nThis cycle is through some of the most spectacular scenery you will see in Ireland. Expect steep uphills\, scary downhills\, windy corners and one or two pot holes! You should be able to do this in around 2.5hrs.\nMIGHTY CROAGH PATRICK\nThis can be a technical downhill\, if you are looking for a competitive time. But remember\, people of all ages go up and down this mountain each year. There is a path up and down it which is recommended. You may think when you get to the bottom that going straight up looks quicker…it is not. It is very steep and will suck energy out of you and you’ll need for the sprint finish. You should be able to do this in 2 hours.\nTHE FINAL CYCLE – 12.5KM\nFinally the cycle into town. This section encompasses a tricky off road bit (expect to walk your bike through some of this unless you are a skilled mountain biker) and then the mostly downhill cycle to Westport Quay. You should be able to do this in around 1hr.\nSPRINT/HOBBLE FINISH\nThe last 1km from the bike-drop to the finish-line. It may feel like the longest journey of your life\, but think of the elation as you cross the line.\nSO THAT IS THE RACE. ARE YOU FIT ENOUGH?\nSix months is enough time to go from couch potato to being able to do the race in under 8 hours. You will not get fit however by thinking about it – you must do it! Four x 1 hour training sessions a week should be enough to get you there. \n\n\nWe recommend you contact your doctor before you start your training to ensure you have no medical conditions that may be aggravated by your training. Ask your doctor about your heart rate and what level he recommends you should train at (especially if you are overweight). Get used to taking your own heart rate or buy a monitor. \nFinally best of luck and remember… Life is not a spectator sport! \n\n\n\n\n
